AI in legal proceedings discussed at CIIRC CTU

19.10.2026

The Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics at CTU (CIIRC CTU), in cooperation with the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence (NCUI), hosted an expert discussion workshop titled AI in Legal Proceedings. The event focused on the potential applications of artificial intelligence in legal practice, as well as the risks and challenges associated with its reliability, transparency and accountability.

The workshop was opened by the Scientific Director of CIIRC CTU, Prof. Vladimír Mařík. The keynote speaker was Prof. Vladimír Smejkal, who introduced participants to the use of AI in legal proceedings, including civil, administrative and criminal proceedings.

In his presentation, Prof. Smejkal explored the wide range of potential AI applications, from data analysis and classification to information retrieval, support for evidence assessment, and assistance in preparing and enforcing decisions. He also highlighted the risks associated with large language models (LLMs), particularly the generation of incorrect or fabricated legal references and the difficulty of explaining their outputs. Another key topic was how to ensure transparency, accountability and the possibility of reviewing decisions involving AI. Attention was also given to the differences between opaque black-box systems and more interpretable glass-box approaches, as well as the requirements of the EU AI Act.

The presentation was followed by a highly stimulating expert discussion, with active participation from representatives of CIIRC CTU, NCUI and partner organisations. The discussion focused particularly on the boundaries of responsible AI use, methods for verifying AI-generated outputs and the importance of maintaining human oversight of decision-making processes. The workshop concluded with both professors summarising the key findings and recommendations.

The workshop was held as part of Project No. TQ28000003, co-funded with state support from the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic under the SIGMA Programme.
